We love this mover and are always so stoked to see her dancing, spinning, and Qi Gong-ing (that’s likely not a word) all around LA! Alexis Colianni is a jack of so many trades, but we are legit over the moon to have her teaching a Qi-Gong workshop at our Urban Retreat which is just ONE MONTH AWAY! Here are Alexis’ answers to our questions:
Moved LA: How would you describe yourself?
Alexis: I study and practice the ancient healing art called, Qi Gong. I am apprentice to a Qi Gong master who moved from Shanghai to the United States to share Qi Gong and "Natural Healing," with westerners. I work as his assistant and I teach Qi Gong classes and workshops and do one-on-one Qi Gong/healing sessions with private clients.
Moved LA: What’s your story?
Alexis: I learned about Qi Gong in the very "main-stream" suburban town in Illinois where I grew up. I was home visiting family and went for a massage, and the massage therapist mentioned Qi Gong, and right away - ding! - I was like, "What - is that!?" He showed me a few simple moves, and I was fascinated by how powerfully I could feel the energy. A couple years later, I began researching and practicing Qi Gong. Shortly thereafter, I was struck, very clearly, with the intention, "I am going to really learn this, and I am going to teach it to people," so I went in search of a master.
Moved LA: Why do you do this work?
Alexis: I generally follow my gut -- my instincts -- and it steers me in the right direction. So when I got that clear message to learn and teach Qi Gong, I followed it. I love practicing because it's preventative medicine, moving meditation, and the clarity and vitality cultivated during practice spill over into the rest of life. I love teaching Qi Gong because I delight in seeing other people feel calm, energized and sparkly. I didn't realize that energy healing work would be a part of my studies -- it is! It's so cool - it's a mystery and obvious and a privilege, and I'm grateful for it.
Moved LA: Who is your role model, and why?
Alexis: I've never before given an answer to this question that I felt 100% genuine about, so here's a first: I'd say God. I don't know what exactly God is, but I do believe in this benevolent source of creation that is unconditional love and forgives, that is unrestrained and unblocked, forward moving and can do anything, and I aspire to be like that.
Moved LA: If you could give everyone one piece of advice on their health and wellness, what would it be?
Alexis: Your mind and your emotions control your health. I see proof of this in the office every day, so let out your emotion! This is much healthier than letting it stay inside and stagnate. Release it. Breathe. Smile. Let it go. Give yourself credit for being the awesome human you are.
Moved LA: If you could have one super power, what would it be?
Alexis: To fly! I think it's possible -- they say we only use 10% of our brains -- there must be some flying capability area of the brain that we simply haven't yet activated. Because ... when I'm hiking and I stop to look out at the mountains and the horizon, I am overcome with an urge to soar into it. 'Seems like it would be exhilarating and peaceful, and, come to think of it, environmentally friendly, economical, and a great option when heading to a location with limited parking.
Moved LA: What are you top three favorite things to do when you have time off?
Alexis: Go to dance class, play outside (hiking, swimming in the ocean, playing tennis), and spending time with family & friends. Did I kind of cheat on this one? ;)
Moved LA: What’s up next for you?
Alexis: I am teaching a workshop this Saturday, June 29th, at Hyperslow, a beautiful studio near the Grove. All levels, 11:30am - 1pm. If you register HERE you receive an early bird discount.
