Mover Monday: Kiera Breaugh

Kiera Breaugh.jpg

We are SO excited to feature Kiera Breaugh today! Not only is she an extremely talented choreographer and professional dancer, but she uses her medium in such an inspiring and meaningful way. Kiera examines systems of oppression and allows audiences to get a little uncomfortable while questioning the structures around them through her work. Also a youtuber and podcaster, Kiera exemplifies the kind of forward thinking, honest, and MOVING ideals that we admire so much!

Moved LA: How would you describe yourself?

Kiera: I'm a dancer/choreographer whose work often investigates oppression and societal structures. I also have a YouTube channel and podcast where I talk a lot about race relations and the ways systems of oppression work together and reinforce each other.

Moved LA: What’s your story?

Kiera: My choreography seeks to challenge the comfort of the viewer. As a black woman, I have an intersectional viewpoint that causes me to see and experience the world in a very specific way. The choreography that comes out of me is often representative of that intersection, and the pain and frustration that comes with having a marginalized identity. I am very passionate about using dance as a tool to wake up the world and add clarity to the chaos. My YouTube channel (Kiera Breaugh) and podcast (Mixed Feelings with Kiera Breaugh) are other modalities I use in my attempt to add clarity to the chaos.

Moved LA: Who is your role model and why?

Kiera: I've got a few. Dance wise my role models are Parris Goebel, Emma Portner and Ian Eastwood, because their choreography is so innovative and unique. Life wise, some of my role models are Jameela Jamil and Roxane Gay for the way they use their voices and platforms to illuminate truth and advocate for the upward mobility of the unheard.

Moved LA: If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?

Kiera: Penny from The Proud Family

Moved LA: If you could give everyone one piece of advice about living with more intention, what would it be?

Kiera: Meditate and listen more.

Moved LA: What are your top 3 favorite things to do when you need to relax and have fun?

Kiera: Yoga, going for a bike ride and dancing around my room!

DEFINITELY keep up with Kiera and check out all the platforms where she is actively adding clarity to the chaos. Check her out on Youtube, her podcast, website, and Instagram
